In a new poll from the Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics, Harris holds a 31-point lead over former President Donald Trump among likely voters ages 18 to 29.
Social scientists point to Gen Z as the most diverse generation of Americans to date . Nearly 50 percent are racial and ethnic minorities. They had Barack Obama as their president for 8 years and they saw marriage equality become a reality. Sixteen percent identify as LGBTQIA and they tend to be supportive of a range of gender identities. They are often from diverse families including at least one parent who is an immigrant.
They are the truly tech savvy generation. Gen Zers have lived their lives fully connected digitally.
Along with their digital skills, Gen Z is more activist. As one person in that demographic said, “We have no choice.” They know the threat of creeping fascism and the looming disaster of climate change among other crises.
But I think pollsters and social scientists have underestimated what happens to young people who grow up doing active shooter drills.
A case in point is March for Our Lives, the youth activist group that emerged after the Parkland,FL school shooting. They have made their first ever political endorsement, supporting Kamala Harris for president.
I became a social justice activist out of the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam war. The death by violence of people you admire, of people you know, changes you. People I went to high school with were coming home in body bags from Vietnam.
I have stayed an activist. Not all of my generation did, by far.
I hope you will stay active, Generation Z. You have a lot to deal with.
I’ll try to have your backs for as long as I can.
